Although she is new to the Stuart community, Profesora Kathia Monard-Weissman comes with a background full of experience and accomplishments that make her a role model and a source of guidance for her students. Born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Profesora Monard attended an all-girls Catholic K-12 school just like Stuart. Her faith and strong sense of family gave her a foundation that she continues to value today, and she enjoys sharing these parts of her life with her students.
Before becoming a Spanish teacher, Profesora Monard originally dreamed of becoming a doctor. She began her teaching career as an English teacher, but through her experiences, she discovered her true passion: teaching her native language and sharing her culture with others. She ran international exchanges with students from American universities, gaining experience connecting with people all around the world.
With the support of a Fulbright scholarship, her academic journey led her to the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Master’s in Education and PhD in International and Development Education. Despite exploring many exciting career paths, she always found her way back to the classroom.
Her favorite part about teaching is the connection she builds with her students. She enjoys motivating them and learning from them as much as they learn from her. Sharing her culture while also learning about others makes teaching feel authentic and rewarding. She describes teaching as a way to express her true self and make a positive impact, saying that her work allows her to combine her love for people, learning, and communication.
Outside of school, Profesora Monard loves spending time in nature. She enjoys hiking, walking, and being outdoors, saying “ I feel at peace when I’m with nature.” and also enjoys spending time with her husband and sons. She is deeply proud of her Ecuadorian heritage and values the lessons it has taught her about family, culture, and perseverance. One piece of advice she gives to her students is simple but powerful: “Just do what your heart tells you, follow your dreams.” Her life and career reflect that philosophy, showing students that passion, dedication, and staying true to oneself can lead to a meaningful and fulfilling path.
