Mrs. McLaughlin has been a part of the Stuart Community for over twenty years, serving as a student, parent, and teacher.
Prior to teaching, Mrs. McLaughlin grew up in New Hope and graduated from Stuart’s Upper School. She attended Middlebury College, majoring in both French and History. Her teaching career started at Villa Victoria for two years before joining Stuart in 2006. Since then, two of her daughters have graduated from Stuart, Madeline ‘17, Sarah ‘20, and her third daughter, Claire, will be graduating in 2027.
At Stuart, Mrs. McLaughlin has taught French in all middle school grades French 1, 2, and 3 in the upper school. Along with French, she has also taught 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade history. When asked what inspired her to become a teacher, specifically for middle school students, she mentioned that both her parents were teachers, and that teaching was something that was always part of her life. Mrs. McLaughlin also shared that initially she thought she wanted to teach high school students, but when given the opportunity to “see the energy and enthusiasm of middle school students, I was hooked!” Her favorite part of working with middle schoolers is their energy, natural inquisitiveness, and joy in learning new things. Mrs. McLaughlin makes an effort to get to know her students, which makes it easier for them to feel comfortable participating in class. She highlighted that her favorite part of the school day is coming into the middle school resource center and having conversations with students in the mornings. Along with that, she takes pride in watching her fifth-grade French students who come in without much knowledge about French, become 7th and 8th-graders who can speak and write sentences in French.
Outside of the classroom, Mrs. McLaughlin has many interests, including traveling. Paris is her favorite place to visit; she specifically enjoys the city, history, food, and overall culture. Along with traveling, she enjoys spending time with family and reading. As an alumnae, parent, and teacher, Mrs. Mclaughlin has a very unique and personalized experience at Stuart. When asked what specific Sacred Heart tradition has been the most memorable, she shared that watching all of her daughters receive rings at the junior ring ceremony was really special for her.
Overall, Mrs. McLaughlin is a valued and important member of Stuart, and we are very lucky to have her in our community.
