March is a busy time for a multitude of reasons. Flowers begin to bloom, storms begin to subside, and most importantly: March Madness. It is the most important time of the year for basketball fans, often bringing in more viewers than the NBA Final. According to Sports Media Watch, the 2026 March Madness Championship had 18.3 million viewers compared to the 2025 NBA Finals that had 10.2 million viewers. This disparity shows how collegiate basketball is often more appreciated than the official league. The National Championship is not the only crucial moment for the series, and the entire month is filled with unforgettable moments. Seed upsets, coaching mishaps, and media disasters are some of the factors that draw fans to the drug that is March Madness.
Power schools such as Duke, Arizona, and Michigan tend to rule the media with their dominant performances but unexpected upsets make the series worth watching. Some of the most notable upsets were 6-seed BYU being upset by 11-seed Texas. Everyone was in clear favor of BYU, especially since their freshman AJ Dybantsa has been on fire since he landed on campus. The BYU Cougars lost 79-71 to Texas. Another loss that shocked the world was Duke losing in the last minute to UCONN. The game was widely believed to produce the unofficial winner of the national championship yet, Duke choked in the last minute. Freshman, Cayden Boozer had an unfortunate turnover in a moment of panic which resulted in a UCONN basket. Everyone in the arena was shocked and no one could believe their eyes. Lastly, one of the most surprising losses was the national championship. Michigan practically blew UCONN out and virtually held a lead the whole game. These are only a few of the most notable recounts of the eventual month of March.
Standout teams aren’t the sole name of the game, but also standout players. A positive performance from a player defines their draft probability. For example, Koa Peat made a name for himself this March with his insane performance. He is a freshman from the University of Arizona and averaged 14.1 PTS and 27.5 mins. These stats reflect his grit and determination as a player. Another standout player was Cameron Boozer from Duke. He averaged 22.5 PTS and 10.5 rebounds. He is currently projected to be a top 10 pick for the draft. A few other players to watch in the draft are Yaxel Lendeborg (Michigan), Braylon Mullins (UCONN), and Cameron Carr (Baylor).
The Men’s March Madness series this year was truly an unforgettable one, resulting in the Michigan Wolverines becoming the national championships. The games were filled with tension, determination, and moments of surprise. 2026 was a great year for collegiate basketball and will surely be hard to beat.
