On Friday Sept. 9, Stuart Country Day School’s varsity volleyball team pulled off a win against Hopewell Valley following an electrifying three set match. The game started at 4pm at the Fruscione Athletic Center, lasting an hour and a half.
Stuart won the first set, 25-17, and lost the second set by a narrow two points. The varsity team needed to win the third set in order to bring home a win. After 46 competitive points, Stuart won the third set 25-21.
“It was exciting. Once it went into the third set, that’s when it got really intense. It was a fantastic way to spend a Friday, watching the team work together and come away with a win.” said Kristen Zosche, Dean of the Stuart Upper School.
Led by coach Anna Kachmarski and team captains Lucy Simon (#24) and Alisha Wong (#0), the team encouraged each other on and off the court. Screams of encouragement before a serve, high fives after winning a point, and team huddles between points slipped into the gameplay. Despite the long fight, spirits were kept up even after the end of the game.
“I think the best way to see how excited we were when we won was when I looked over at Coach and saw her jump up when we got that last point,” commented Simon. “We all just fed off of each other the entire game, through hugs and slaps on the back. We all came together like a real team. Very proud of my teammates.”
Stuart will not play Hopewell again this season. However, the season is far from over.
“Wish us luck!” said Lucy Simon.
