Last Friday, Nov. 26 the Princeton community gathered together for the lighting of the Palmer Square Christmas tree. The lighting has been an annual tradition in Princeton for many years, and is a staple event for many families. The lighting is a classic symbol of the start of the Christmas season. Therefore, this year was an important year since last year it did not happen. One Princeton resident, Greta Nelson, described the event as, “Holly jolly”.
This Christmas tree is a 70ft Norway Spruce adorned with 32,000 lights. It sits in the center of local stores such as The Bent Spoon, J.Crew, Dandelion, and Thomas Sweet Chocolate.
On the night of the lighting, the temperatures fell to 35 to 40 degrees, with a strong wind that amplified the chill. To combat these cold gusts, almost everyone had a hot drink in their hands from one of the many surrounding shops such as The Bent Spoon and Small World Coffee. There was also live music courtesy of the Princeton High School choir and a local band. “It was crisp and clear, and just exquisite,” commented one spectator. Santa, of course, made an appearance on top of the Nassau Inn, a highlight of the event.
The Christmas Tree lighting has set the festive tone for this upcoming holiday season. Bringing joy and unity to the local community. Especially after such an extended period of time being away from each other, this event was vital for the Princeton community.
