Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, the first book in the Shatter Me series, features Juliette Farras, the main character with an innate ability – perceived as a curse – that she can’t touch anyone, or they die. Her touch is lethal and it has killed only a few.
In this dystopian world, birds don’t fly the same, air isn’t breathed the same; the world is suffering and Juliette is locked up. Her touch, her power, her weapon, is what’s keeping her there. The cell is dark and she keeps her thoughts to herself, she hasn’t spoken in years.
Shatter Me is written with beautiful language and techniques that allow readers to follow the main character so thoroughly as to feel her pain. Through crossed out lines that are just lines, through repetition and sporadic thoughts, we feel Juliette as a person, as someone you really know. Every word in this book has a meaning and when reading you feel there, and when you’re done you’ll be left with questions, with answers, and with a new perspective on life.
This dystopian novel will leave you with heart-wrenching adoration for Juliette and a crawling need to read the next book. The Shatter Me series consists of 11 books; but do not worry about not getting invested because I can guarantee you will.
This is only the beginning of my series review. You can expect a review of the second novel, Unravel Me, by the end of the month. And while you are waiting, grab a copy of Shatter Me, along with your choice of snack, and then prepare to be amazed.
