On Oct. 14, the Stuart Black Student Union (BSU) hosted an upper school sleepover retreat which allowed members of the affinity group to hang out, have fun, and bond with each other as a community. There were a multitude of games and activities on the agenda that night, includingHide and Seek, a majorette dance lesson, dinner, a movie, and a DIY Culture Fashion Show, in which participants created outfits out of scraps that demonstrated stereotypes and how we can combat them as black women.
Overall, the experience was not only fun, but brought comfort to the girls in the BSU community. They talked and made memories with each other throughout the evening.
The BSU would like to extend a thank you to the faculty who supervised and to Ms. Jones, the Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging who also serves as the faculty advisor of the BSU, for coordinating the event. At Stuart, we believe that diversity is a very important part of society and collective well-being. Our offered affinity groups bring safe spaces, comfort, and a group to rely on or share experiences with. And sometimes, even fun sleepovers like this!
As the year moves on the BSU hopes to spread awareness, educate, and further connect in an effort to continue growth in diversity at Stuart.
